A successful third field season
In the third season of the project, the trapping team was particularly successful and a further 33 birds were caught and tagged in the North Sea between March and May. On one occasion, as many as 10 birds were caught in one night, despite challenging trapping conditions. As in previous years, the birds were fitted with either external or implantable transmitters. After the birds left for their breeding grounds, where data transmission is usually not possible, we are now seeing the first birds back in the Baltic and North Sea. One bird (244023) has even set a new distance record: it travelled over 5000 km towards Siberia and bred east of the Taimyr Peninsula. Details can be seen in the tracking map.
